Ryan, one of our recent customers, was kind enough to send us a few photos of his guitar skinning process. With a SkinYourSkunk.com, premium vinyl guitar skin…this process takes about one hour and is really fairly simple. Ryan chose our “Hot Lips” design, available under our “Sexy Skins” category.
After a SkinYourSkunk.com customer purchases their skin, we print and quality check the skin. We package the guitar skin in a hard, cardboard tube, include some promotional materials and/or free gifts and ship the guitar skin using USPS First Class Mail with tracking. We contact the customer after the skin has been shipped and send them the tracking number.
The customer should then disassemble their guitar, removing all the hardware including pickups, volume and tone controls, etc. You DO NOT need to remove the neck. This is also a good time to give the current paint a cleaning with Windex or some other, mild cleaner to remove any dirt, dust, sweat, etc.
Lay your guitar skin, face up on a hard flat surface and place the guitar where you would like the image to reside. Carefully slide the guitar around until it covers the area which will become the final design. SkinYourSkunk.com typically adds one inch in each direction to the printed skin to give the customer room to reposition the graphic to their liking. Then…with a marker pen, rough trace the guitar slightly larger than needed. You want to have extra vinyl to trim off later.
Remember…you can always cut off more, you can never cut off less.
With a good, sharp pair of scissors, cut along your rough outline. Again, you can always cut more…never less.
You will now attach the guitar skin to your guitar. We strongly suggest visiting our “Our Process” page at SkinYourSkunk.com for some video suggestions. There are different methods of attaching your skin. All of them are good but you should choose the one which is most comfortable to you.
With a brand new, sharp razor blade or art knife, you will now remove the excess skin that overhangs the guitar body and cut holes for your hardware. As you can see in this picture, where you cut for your hardware is pretty obvious by the indented vinyl. Once your final cuts are complete, wipe down your guitar with a clean, soft cloth being sure to apply some additional pressure to the newly cut areas to assure the adhesive sticks strongly.
Reinstall your hardware and you are basically done. Your final step depends upon your personality. Have a beer, jump around screaming how great your guitar looks or simply plug her in and jam out!
SkinYourSkunk.com guitar skins utilize a marine grade, premium vinyl which is very forgiving and stretches. Application is easy and the adhesive holds strongly for years. Although, you can always remove your skin without any damage to your guitar.
